Have you ever had a significant or dramatic personal experience in
which the reality of the body became clear? Ed Maupin calls such a
somatic insight a "Body Epiphany." He writes: "Whatever its form, the
body epiphany matures into a more sustained state of embodiment, in
which every aspect of experience maintains some link with the sense of
the lived body. Embodiment is close to the center of what we attempt
to bring about with somatic therapy and somatic education." This
treatise on embodiment was written for students of bodywork, but anyone
with a body will profit from Maupin's brilliant way of seeing the
world. When he lived at Esalen, he was educated by many of the
pioneers of embodiment, including by Ida Rolf.
